Advising 101 and 102
The Academic Advising Council presents two faculty/staff workshops, Advising 101 and Advising 102, each year through the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL). Full descriptions of both workshops are presented below. Advising 101 is usually offered some time during winter quarter, while Advising 102 is typically offered in the spring. Consult the CTL website for this year’s workshop schedule.
Advising 101 – The Nuts and Bolts of Advising:
Policies, Resources, and PeopleSoft
Tuesday, February 9, 2009, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Center for Teaching and Learning
- Are you new to advising and would like some information and support?
- Are you a veteran advisor who could use a brush-up on resources and forms?
- Do you just need a primer on effective advising in the PeopleSoft environment?
If so, the Advising 101 workshop is for you!
Members of the Academic Advising Council facilitate a discussion of the nuts and bolts of advising, beginning with an overview of university policies, common forms, dealing with students on academic probation, and resources available for effective advising. Next, we demonstrate some of the very basic PeopleSoft functions most relevant to academic advisors. Participants receive a notebook to organize advising materials.
Advising 102 – One-On-One With a Student:
What Do I Do Now?
- A student has a death in the family and comes to you for help. What do you do?
- A freshman is struggling with calculus and needs support. How can you help him?
- One of your students cuts class frequently, does not turn in her work and seems disoriented when you talk with her. What should you do?
Advising 102 focuses on realistic scenarios of advisor/student interactions. Members of the Academic Advising Council present some common issues that advisors often face, and the group discusses possible solutions.
